This is why I'm a Coach

Dear ,

At this point you know that I've been hinting about the release of my brand-new product,
 Complete Athlete Development.

But up until now, I haven't revealed to you why I created it in
the first place.

And it's an important story that you need to hear...

Just about 12 years ago, I started my sports-training career in a
facility in Toronto, Canada.

I was young, eager and VERY wet-behind-the-ears.

But for a 21 year old kid still working his way through college,
it was an absolute dream job.

The facility was the 'Official Home of the Toronto Maple Leafs'
(which was HUGE considering I grew up in Toronto) and our
clientele ranged from professional hockey players and Olympic
skiers to World Champion figure skaters and international
caliber tennis stars.

As I look back now, the training programs we created and used
were very basic and somewhat outdated, but at the time, I was
on top of the world... and certainly didn't know any better.

I remember distinctly the day we had our official grand opening.

The facility had been in business for several months and I had
been an awestruck employee working with elite and notable
athletes for the better part of 8 weeks.

Media bulletins had been sent out, invitations mailed and a host
of celebrity Canadian sporting stars had agreed to attend.

The buzz in the facility the morning of the grand opening was
100% palpable.

As me and the other employees worked to clean the facility and
tidy the overall appearance, we were absolutely giddy with the
anticipation of what tonight would bring.

I mean, LEGENDARY sporting figures would be in attendance and
camera crews from every major network were scheduled to
broadcast live from the event.

My job for the evening, as it was relayed to me by my boss, was
to be hospitable in general, smile a bunch and stay away from
the camera's and media crews (he was a bit of a glory hog and
wanted to make sure he was the one being highlighted front and
center!).

So, after pitching in my share of work making the facility glow
like new, I headed home thinking about how much fun I was
going to have that evening and what a great story I'd get to
tell my grand-kids one day...

"That's right, youngsters. YOUR grand-dad was there hanging out
with all those professional and Olympic athletes!!"

It should be noted that over the next several years of my
career, I trained DOZENS of professional and Olympic athletes
from various sports and trust me when I say that the luster and
appeal of that wears off dramatically after a while...

... But I digress.

So, after a thorough shower, cologne spritz and mouthwash rinse,
I headed back to work for what I believed was going to be the
greatest night of my life.

And in fairness, it was.

I don't want to get too carried away with this story and tell
you that some horrible incident occurred that shook the very
foundations of my young, impressionable life beyond repair.

The truth of the matter is that I have nothing but very fond
memories of that night.

I met some of my boyhood idols, spent time rubbing elbows with
major sporting and political figures and even got my first
taste of being interviewed for live TV...

... Against the express wishes of my boss, but he was in the
bathroom and so considered 'indisposed' for this particular
media request.

No, I really can't complain much about that night.

Every young strength coach, no matter what they tell you, DREAMS
of working with the celebrity's of the sporting world.

And here I was at 21 doing just that.

I mean, who needs general fitness clients or young athletes?

I was hanging out with the cream-of-the-crop and developing
the training protocols that could mean the difference between
them becoming Olympic Medalists or tomorrow's forgotten athlete.

Or so I thought.

I remember the second that my career path turned on a dime.

And it happened that night.

One of the co-owning Physicians of this facility began a short
toast and 'official' greeting about half-way through the event.

"We're so happy to be on the cutting-edge of strength and
conditioning" he said while standing on top of our high speed
treadmill (which is quite the irony considering my current-day
stance on those machines!).

"We have only hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of where we
are taking the science of training athletes. In fact, we are
hard at work in partnering with 'x' software company as we
speak"

"First I've heard of that" I remember thinking.

"Within 6 months, we will be releasing the very first
computerized software that will allow you to enter some basic
information about an athlete into the computer and have a
specifically designed training program, created especially for
that athlete, printed out within seconds"

"Seriously?" I thought to myself. "That sounds plain dumb".

The Physician finished his toast...

"And we're going to pilot this new software on all our young
athletes before we use it on our pros".

And there you have it.

That one sentence changed my professional life forever.

Even at 21 years old and terribly inexperienced, I knew that the
secret to training and developing young athletes had NOTHING
to do with generating 'specific' programs by entering some basic
data into a computer.

In fact, that may give you a distinct clue as to why I am so
high on building personal relationship and the Art of Coaching.

Ever since that night, I think I harbored a deep desire to
proof the 'computer age of training' notion wrong.

And you already know the rest of the story.

I read books...

Listened to the experts...

Traveled worldwide working with different athletes...

Tried out some new concepts...

Made mistakes and tried again.

So, before I go any further, here's your chance to get a full
