Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 12:33AM First a coach has to gain, earn and keep the respect of the players. The way that I gain and keep that respect is through 1 on 1 interaction. Being trustworthy, reliable and being as transparent as possible. Every player should know what you are thinking about them as often as possible. I do a truth window with my players. What they know and I know. What they know and I don’t know, and we work together on a consistent model of this. Be as honest as possible. I don’t hide my feelings from players. I let them know when I’m happy with them and when I’m unhappy with them. But I don’t simply tell them I’m unhappy with them. I’ll explain, from a soccer perspective, what they are not providing to the team on that day, during that week, or even season long. I think more importantly be consistent. If you’re consistent you’ll gain their respect. The transparency again, they’ll know where they stand. If you are consistent they will expect a consistency from themselves. Then you provide the excellence.

Friday, April 6, 2007 at 09:38AM All-American Jennifer McElmury is the most decorated player in Golden Gopher soccer history I recently had the chance to sit down and talk with one of the best players to ever come out of Minnesota, Jennifer McElmury. Jennifer McElmury became the first and only player in Minnesota soccer history to earn first team All-America honors after leading the Golden Gophers to an 18-3-2 record during her senior season. The 1997 team co-captain was twice named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year and she led Minnesota to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and Big Ten titles in 1995 and 1997. McElmury holds three of the top-10 positions for points in a season and ranks second all- time in career points (124), goals (49) and assists (26). Her number "27" was retired by the U of M soccer program in 2004.
Thomaz Soares da Silva, aka “Zizinho” or “Mestre Ziza”
Monday, April 2, 2007 at 04:15PM The Italian journalist, Giordano Fatori, while covering the 1950 WC for the “Gazetta dello Sport” had occasion to write - “The football of Zizinho reminds me of Da Vinci painting something rare.” Seeing as how Thomas Soares da Silva went from being called by the dimunitive "Zizinho," to the regal "Mestre Ziza" (Master Ziza) for his displays during the mid to late 1940s, it was a fitting description.
