Pre-Match Talks

Going into the games we all want to fight and die for each other.  We also have the pre-match talks now, when everyone has their turn to say something.  I had to do it in the first game under Jose, against Celtic.  Mine was all effing and blinding but other lads will read out a quote.  It always gets us pumped up.

Pre-Match Build Up Should Be Relaxed

The build-up to games is much more relaxed.  We used to have no music, no TV, no nothing.  Now before a game we have it all.  The night before a game is more relaxed, the pre-match meals are more relaxed."  Tiago reveals "one of the secrets" of Mourinho's astonishig success.  "He's like a friend to us," Tiago says with a smile, and a shrug.  "He's one of us."

Role Reversal- Why Do You Want To Play There?

Mourinho enjoys role reversal games, swapping places with his players and sometimes carrying out their orders while they act as manager.

That's what happened to former Manchester United star Karel Poborsky when he told Mourinho- then in charge of Benfica- what position he wanted to play.  Mourinho, who saw Poborsky as a winger, called him in and said, "Right, you're the boss, why do you want to be playmaker?"

He listened, let Poborsky pick his own place in the next match and took him off after half an hour.

Poborsky says, "Mourinho then told me, 'Right, I'm the manager again.  I gave you the chance to prove you were right and you proved nothing.  You will play where I tell you from now on, and if you do not want to, you'll play in the reserves.'"

The Zidane Of Managers

I have never known a manager prepare his training sessions so thoroughly.  Like Zidane with a ball at his feet, Mourinho has this thing that cannot be taught.  He is the Zidane of managers.

I'm A Special One

We have top players at Chelsea and, I'm sorry if I sound arrogant, we have a top manager as well.  I don't want to be compared with coaches from the past, nor do I want to be viewed as the face of young managers in the game.  I have won the Champions League.  I'm not one who comes straight out of the bottle.  I'm a special one.  I am a winner because I'm good at what I do and because I am surrounded by people who think the same.

I Want To Win

I want to win.  Over the last two years I've had the taste.  As a manager you want to feel the biggest success you can achieve.  I want to keep this taste.  I don't want to lose it.  I don't want to get to 2010 or 2012 with just the same titles I have now.  I want more.  The people here have the same ambitions and mentality.  We shouldn't be afraid to say, "I want to win."

The Players Are Your Blood

He put faith in me, gave me confidence and taught me to be strong in believing myself.  Tactically and dealing with players I could not ask for a better teacher, and I could not have learned from anyone better.  It was an experience that was invaluable and I still telephone and talk to him now.  He is a leader to me and I will go on respecting him as a great manager.

He is always close to the players and that is something as a manager you must always be.  They are your blood and the most important thing of all.  They have to respect you and that is something that I learned from Bobby in the way they respect him and will always play for him.  A little something from everything I achieve will always be dedicated to him.

I Am What I Am. I Am Not The Best, I Am Not The Worst, I'm Just Me

Peter Kenyon, who was chief executive at Old Trafford before being lured to Stamford Bridge, has worked with both Ferguson and Mourinho, and he believes Chelsea's new manager can build dynastic success in the same single-minded way as the Scot has done at Manchester United.

Mourinho responds in typical fashion, "I don't want to be compared with other people.  I am what I am, I've done what I've done, and I will try to do well again in the future.  But I know that one day, instead of being a champion at the end of the season, I'll get the sack.  These things happen in football.  I don't think I'm the best in the world when I win, and I don't think I'm the worst when I lose.  I'm just me."

It Is Exciting To Fight A Team With A Lot Of Money

Chelsea get who they want sooner or later, so it might only be a temporary decision.  But I am not jealous of their money.  I find it exciting to fight a team with much bigger potential, financially.

It's East To Desmiss Chelsea's Success Because Of Their Money. But They Still Have To Do The Job.

It's easy to be dismissive of Chelsea's success and say that they've achieved this and that simply because of the money they have.  But the Manager still has to do the job.  He has to sign the right players, pick the right team and get them to win consistently.  He's done all that in my opinion with some style.  You also have to say that he has an outstanding pedigree.  You don't win the Champions League and the UEFA Cup without talent and without making the right decisions.

But what I've learned is that no manager gets everything right.  Yes, you enjoy the highs, but there are lots of lows too.  That's the price on the ticket.  There's a great sense of responsibility when you're the manager.

All The Time He Is Telling Us We Are Going To Win All The Big Trophies

Mourinho is arrogant, but in a way you respect.  And if we want to be the best and win big trophies, it's vital the manager comes across as a winner.  Mourinho makes sure he does.

All the time he is telling us we are going to win all the big trophies this season.  He emphasises the point so often that the players now believe they are born winners.  Honestly, we actually believe we are going to win the league and the Champions League.  I think Mourinho has brainwashed all of us.

I rate him among the best coaches in the world.  He is unbelievable when it comes to analysing games and putting players in the right frame of mind to maximise their effectiveness.  No matter who we play, Mourinho always knows every minor detail about that team.  Believe me, he is as sharp as a knife.  Nothing eludes him.

They Have Something Else, Something Put There By Jose Mourinho

It was terrible to lose to Chelsea after playing so well, but at the end of the game you had to acknowledge you had been up against something special, something you don't encounter so often these days.  Chelsea have great talent and resources, but you have to admit they have something else, something put there by Jose Mourinho.

The Speak About Us Because They Know We Can Win

Mourinho responds to comments from Wenger claiming Chelsea are merely an 'effective' team, who lack the flair of Arsenal.

"In the beginning were were called boring Chelsea.  After that we couldn't score goals.  After that we were top but would not be for long.  After that, when Christmas arrives, we will lose matches.  After that it is Boxing Day and Chelsea never win on Boxing Day.  After that they said we cannot win in the North.  After that they said if we lost the Carling Cup semi-final, the blip would start.

If they really believed we are not strong enough to win this competition, they would not speak about us.  the speak about us because they know we can win."

Top Teams Have To Win Over A Sustained Period Of Time

There's an enormous desire to put Chelsea right up at the top.  In order to be a top team, you have to win things more than once and do it over a sustained period of time.

Buying Galacticos Doesn't Give You The Right To Dominate

People will accuse them of buying the title.  But although Mourinho has had a massive budget, you still have to get the right players in and put a team together.  If you want proof that money does not give you the right to dominate everything, just look at Real Madrid, who have spent more than anyone and now look certain to finish a second successive season without a trophy.

I Can Be In Love With My Players For What They Have Done This Year, But That Does Not Mean I will Be In Love With Them If They Don't Do It Again Next Year

Now I am emotional with my players, but that won't last for ever.  I can be in love with my players for what they have achieved this season but if they don't do it again next year I won't be in love any more.

I cannot say to John Terry, "You are my captain and the Footballer of the Year and you have been fantastic so I promise you will always play next year."  He has got to continue performing.  Petr Cech has been absolutely fantastic.  But next year he must want to prove again that he is the best keeper in the world.  Claude Makelele must look to finish his career at Chelsea with even more trophies.

Everyone must be hungry to improve.  I will not have anyone thinking their place in the team is already waiting for them just because they have been fantastic this season.

I Look Not At Their Faces, But Their Performance

I told the players that we are better than PSG, but motivation will make the difference.  The players have to fight for a position in the team and I look not at their faces, who they are or how much they might have cost.  I look for what they can give me in the performance.

I Have To Defend What Is Mine

I have to defend what is mine.  The Champions League is mine at the moment.  I am the last winner as manager of the Champions League- so it is my competition.  I have to try and fight for Chelsea and I have to try and fight for myself by defending my cup until the last moment.

Mourinho Has An Ability To Change A Game

Jose's absence will not affect us totally although it will be a blow.  Mourinho has a massive presence and having him on the bench helps us enormously.  Mourinho is a marvellous boss and can change a game with his instructions.  That talent makes him the best boss there is.  He has the ability to think on his feet regarding his substitutions and the positional or tactical changes to the shape of the team.  We just look to Mourinho on the bench and we instantly know what we are doing and what we need to correct.
